The low numbered guns had hard, brittle receivers and bolts. Low numbered original 1903 rifles in military configuration are coveted collector pieces. Chances are your rifle will be above the serial range. Or a "Rock Island" under serial 285,507 as Banshee posted. You only need to be concerned if you have a 1903 of "Springfield" manufacture under serial 800,000. If you have a 1903 above the serial numbers or a 1903A3, the NS bolt is not necessary and there is no need to have a "NS" marked bolt. You need to find out if you have a 1903 or a 1903A3. All of the rifles of these manufacturers are far above the problem serial range and were made in the WWII era. Remington made 1903 rifles and 1903A3 rifles.
It's bolt has no markings other than a "R" denoting Remington as the manufacturer. I have another WWII 1943 mfg., 1903A3 rifle. I have seen 1903 bolts also marked with large "NS" on the bolt body. The "NS" on my bolt is on the side of the rear locking lug in small letters. I was given a gun I thought was only good for a boat anchor and found it was in fact serviceable after reading an old, obsolete reloading manual. I took it hunting and harvested a large Hog with it. I took the gun apart, cleaned up the stock and took the barreled action to a Gunsmith and had the new barrel installed and headspaced.I threw a 6X scope on the gun, zeroed it and found it preferred 180 gr. I happened to have a new, military(WWII) 1903A3 4 groove barrel. It had "NS" stamped on the bolt(nickel steel). He then recommends the bolt be replaced with a nickel steel bolt, which would spring a bit in the case of an overload.Īfter reading his 1959 conclusions, I went to the closet and took a look at the old Springfield. Parker recommended users of these receivers keep the caliber in a standard caliber.
